Our new Little Free Seed Library is open for all. It's located just outside The Station Coffeeshop on 16th Ave S. There's room for gardening books on the top two shelves. Seeds, plants, pots and small tools can go on the bottom two shelves. We hope this becomes a well-used resource for our community!
Hello! A little update on the Pollinator Garden at Bayview Triangle. We had a very successful work party with volunteers from El Centro, Comcast, and Trees for Seattle. Thanks to all who braved the stormy day and worked so hard . We managed to weed and plant about 90% of the garden before we got completely rained out. Thanks to Metro and Urban Feed and Garden for the beautiful plants. Thanks to Katie from Trees for Seattle who took these photos and led the work party. It truly takes a community to make things happen. Stay tuned for our next work party date and enjoy the new plants when you walk by.
If you have been keeping up with our Garden Club, you've probably heard us talk about our efforts over the past three years to clean up and maintain the Bayview Triangle at the corner of Beacon and 15th Ave S. We have held quarterly work parties, with Tree Ambassadors support, cleaning up trash and maintaining the landscape. In winter of 2015, we were given money from the city to plant a pollinator garden and installed a mason bee house to help our struggling pollinators and to bring some beauty to the corner.
Our garden club was shocked and saddened to discover that the pollinator garden was dug up last Thursday, Feb. 19th. Metro has decided to relocate a bus stop at the site and add in a bus shelter. As far as we can tell, no notice was given to us or the community. We are still in the midst of trying to find out how this happened and what the final plan is for the space. Stay tuned as we get more details. Thanks to the community for all of their support over the past 3 years. We hope to continue in some shape or form. This event is family-friendly and open to all ages. Volunteers will plant trees and other plants that will become the future forest of the park.
There will be a celebration FREE LUNCH and prizes at the Green Seattle Day Hub, Camp Long, after-party at 12:30, which is open to all volunteers from the other Green Seattle Day sites throughout the city. Visit their website for more details and to sign up. Pollinator Garden Work Party
Join the Beacon Hill Garden Club and Seattle Tree Ambassadors on Saturday, April 23rd from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. We will be doing some general clean up, weeding, and mulching at the Bayview Triangle (Beacon Ave S & 15th Ave S by the Shell Station). Check out the progress on our Pollinator Garden. We will also be setting up our mason bee house and putting out the bees for the spring. Everyone is welcome to join us! Dress for the weather and to get dirty. We will provide tools, gloves and snacks. Our master gardener had a great tip for how to stay warm when out in the windy and rainy PNW garden. Before putting on your regular garden gloves, pull on a pair of latex disposable gloves first. It keeps your fingers from getting wet and subsequently cold. We tried it out at our Pollinator Work party and it worked great!
