Our garden club was shocked and saddened to discover that the pollinator garden was dug up last Thursday, Feb. 19th. Metro has decided to relocate a bus stop at the site and add in a bus shelter. As far as we can tell, no notice was given to us or the community. We are still in the midst of trying to find out how this happened and what the final plan is for the space. Stay tuned as we get more details. Thanks to the community for all of their support over the past 3 years. We hope to continue in some shape or form.
If you have been keeping up with our Garden Club, you've probably heard us talk about our efforts over the past three years to clean up and maintain the Bayview Triangle at the corner of Beacon and 15th Ave S. We have held quarterly work parties, with Tree Ambassadors support, cleaning up trash and maintaining the landscape. In winter of 2015, we were given money from the city to plant a pollinator garden and installed a mason bee house to help our struggling pollinators and to bring some beauty to the corner.

Hope you had a great holiday and new years! The garden club is back so join us at Cafe Bengodi on Tuesday, 1/24, at 6:30 pm. We'll do some catching up, peruse some seed catalogs, and start planning for our next event, a presentation on Mason Bees, in February. Stay tuned for details or join us on Tuesday to help make it happen!
This event is family-friendly and open to all ages. Volunteers will plant trees and other plants that will become the future forest of the park.
There will be a celebration FREE LUNCH and prizes at the Green Seattle Day Hub, Camp Long, after-party at 12:30, which is open to all volunteers from the other Green Seattle Day sites throughout the city. Visit their website for more details and to sign up. We had a very successful work party this part Sunday. We had seven intrepid volunteers working hard to clear out the trash (there was a whole mattress this time), do some serious weeding, and plant some new plants. Thanks to the King County Conservation District and Forterra for getting us additional new beautiful pollinator plants. We were very grateful that the rain clouds let us have a few hours of sunshine to work in. Thanks to all of the neighbors who appreciated our efforts and told us so. Thanks to the wonderful stranger who bought us granola bars to keep us fortified. Stop by and enjoy the finished work. We'll take a break from work parties until Spring. Check our Facebook page or sign up for our email list to find out when. The last work party was a success! The garden has been weeded of horsetail and blackberry and looks like a garden again. The bees are loving the lavender right now. What: Pear-a-dise, an annual event hosted by the Seattle Beacon Hill Garden Club and Beacon Arts.
When: Sunday, August 21st, from 2-6 pm. Where: 100 year old pear orchard at Garden House, 2336 15th Ave S. Why: Free pears, crafts and games. More info to come. There are two great volunteer opportunities in the Beacon Hill neighborhood this Saturday, July 30th.
10 am - 11 am join us at the Station for some caffeine while we plan Pear-a-dise. This annual event invites our neighbors to pick pears in the Garden House pear orchard. There will also be free games, recipes, and crafts. It's a fun family event and we need volunteers. Stop by and say hi! 11 am - 1 pm we will walk over to the Bayview Triangle and do a little clean up and weeding on the pollinator garden. Everyone is welcome, no experience necessary! |
